How Advanced Analytics helps Stena Line act on schedule and absence data

Every company has data and the bigger you are, the more data you probably have about your workforce and business. When shown and used properly, this data could be the wind in your sails to improve important business KPIs. It’s one of the reasons why we built Advanced Analytics at Quinyx and why Stena Line was eager to try it out.

Stena Line is one of the world’s largest ferry operators with over 25,000 yearly sailings, employing over 4,300 employees in six different regions. So when we say they have a lot of data, we do mean a lot of data. We spoke with Kevin Morris, People Product Lead at Stena Line about Advanced Analytics and talked about his experience using it thus far.

Previously, we couldn’t easily pull all the relevant data and it would take a lot of time to create dashboards. I’ve been working with Advanced Analytics for a few weeks now, received feedback from managers and it’s basically everything we’re looking for.” says Morris.

In addition, Morris listed the three key benefits of this new solution:

  1. Summarizes data easily and it’s better to navigate the data within Quinyx

  2. Visually appealing and ability to compare between ports in different regions

  3. Saves a lot of costs of building their own system, integrations or APIs

Morris elaborates that data is important for many departments and groups within Stena Line. Ranging from controllers, HR and district managers about various KPIs like worked hours, absence and overtime. “Now everything is already in the system for them to access. Advanced Analytics is what we required and all we needed.”

StenaLine_AdvancedAnalytics_KPIsStena Line employs 4,300 employees in six different regions. Being able to compare workforce management data across ports and regions is key to enable local managers to meet certain KPIs.

What’s especially important according to Morris is that it helps them see fluctuations and deviations over time and between ports - insights they can use to challenge local managers to meet certain KPIs. On top of that they can spot trends and match that with sailings, time of the year and peak seasons. When asked about what he would like to see added to Advanced Analytics, he mentioned that he would like to see more data refinement possibilities, task-related data and cross KPI comparison at different levels like for example scheduled time versus absence loss.

Overall, Morris thinks everything in Advanced Analytics looks great and adds: “Managers need to see the data to improve and with Quinyx we can visualise that now. We have never been able to do that before. Now, managers can make sure operations work as efficiently as possible, but also save costs and try to reduce absence.”
